Free wheelchair hire for local COVID-19 vaccine appointments

As we’re writing this, almost 10.5 million people in the UK have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This is fantastic news! In our hometown of Harrogate, we are fortunate to have a COVID vaccination centre right on our doorstep, at the Pavilions of Harrogate. Another local centre also opened at Ripon Racecourse in February.

So, to ensure everyone can get to their appointments, we are now offering a free one-day wheelchair hire service! Anyone in Harrogate and District due to receive their COVID-19 vaccine can borrow a wheelchair, free of charge.

How do I get a free wheelchair?

We’ve made the process as simple as possible:

  1. Reserve a wheelchair – You can call us on 01423 799960, email, or fill in our hire equipment form.
  2. Collect your wheelchair from our Harrogate showroom – We’ll give you a collection time. This is so we can sanitise the wheelchair ready for when you arrive. We’ve got a reduced team on hand to help, they’ll be wearing face masks and there’s hand sanitiser at the entrance.
  3. Go to your appointment – Then, you’re free to go and get your COVID-19 vaccine!
  4. Return your wheelchair to our Harrogate showroom – Once you’re finished, please return the wheelchair to us. It will then be deep cleaned ready for reuse.

You don’t need to pay a deposit or leave photo ID. All we ask is that you please return the wheelchair on the same day.

Why are you lending out wheelchairs?

We’ve called Harrogate home for over 25 years. This is our community and many of our local customers are now eligible for the vaccine. However, after months of isolating at home, more people are struggling with their mobility.

Unfortunately, for older people and individuals with serious health conditions, going long periods without much activity can impact mobility.

We’d spoken to local residents who hadn’t used mobility aids before the pandemic, but now found they didn’t have the strength to stand or walk for long periods. So, we started thinking about how we could help and found a simple solution – lending out our hire wheelchair fleet for free!

George, our Sales Director, summed up why this service is important:

“We realised getting out of the house to attend vaccine appointments was going to be challenging for some people unless they had support. That’s why we’ve made our wheelchair hire service free for these occasions.

The idea is, this will help anyone who doesn’t already have a mobility scooter or wheelchair and suddenly finds themselves needing one. But, of course, anyone can reserve and collect a wheelchair to help someone attend their appointment.

To protect our community and move closer to seeing loved ones again, it is crucial that the vaccine is accessible to those eligible. If we can remove any barriers, then we are more than happy to help.”

Let us know how else we can help

Since the beginning of 2020, we’ve been eager to support people through the COVID-19 pandemic wherever we can. We’ve supplied equipment to the Nightingale Hospitals – and volunteered to set them up. Our team have been providing video assessments and safely attending house visits where needed. They’ve even had care chairs delivered in under 48 hours so people can be safely discharged from hospital!
